Project Scope

The Government Information and Library Services division of the Oregon State Library, as a part of its mission to make government information available to the citizens of Oregon, has digitized a historical run of the newsletters published by the Oregon National Guard (ONG). The project covers all of the issues of the different newsletters the Guard published that the State Library has in its collections.

Digital and paper copies of the newsletters are a permanent part of the Oregon State Library's Oregon Documents Collection.

Newsletter History

The Oregon Guardsman was first published by the Oregon National Guard on April 30, 1921. The slogan on the masthead of the first issue describes the purpose of the newsletter: "Authentic Information of the Oregon National Guard." Issues average 4-8 pages.

ONG newsletters are a rich source of historical information including:

  • News about activities and deployment of Guard units across Oregon
  • Budgetary and statistical information about the Guard
  • Promotions in rank of Guard members
  • Photographs of ONG members, facilities and activities
